Introduction Due to its versatility, the usage of Coir (coconut fibre) has become very common among professionals in various industries. Specifically the Horticultural, Agricultural and Erosion Control Industries where Coir is considered far superior to other available natural materials such as Peat Moss which is almost impossible to purchase in various Western countries due to Government restriction. Cocopeat Cocopeat (Coir Fibre Pith or Coir Dust) is a natural and renewable resource extracted from Coconut Husks. It is a by-product of the fibre extraction process from the coconut husk. The coir dust is washed, heat treated, screened and graded before being processed into various commercial products for Horticultural, Agricultural and Erosion Control applications. Having almost a 150 year history in the Horticultural industry Cocopeat is a multipurpose soil conditioner and growing medium and is considered to be the perfect alternative to Peat Moss. Environment friendly, 100% natural and extremely economical, Cocopeat gives high water retention due to its unique sponge like structure. It is a completely homogenous material composed of millions of capillary like micro-sponges that can absorb and retain upto 8 times its own weight in water. High in Lignin and low in Cellulose, Having a high ph value (5.7 to 6.5) and an unusually high cation exchange capacity Coco peat gives long lasting characteristics to the soil as it is not easily mineralized. It has the ability to retain nutrients and oxygen and can ensure upto 75% more root development. Coco peat is a totally organic renewable resource and does not pose a threat to other ecological systems. |
