| Description: | The Jakeman family began making maple syrup in 1876, soon after they arrived from
England. For most of the time since, they practiced mixed farming. In 1965, George
Jakeman incorporated the farm as AUVERGNE FARMS LIMITED. It was a tradition to harvest
maple syrup on the farm, which included the community through a fundraising festival
held there. Through urging from some neighbours producers, we became involved in selling
of maple syrup production supplies, as the nearest suppliers were in Quebec.
Through the development of this enterprise, it was apparent that as producers grew operations to an economic size, they ran into difficulty selling their produce. If producers were to achieve an efficient level of production, they needed a dependable and stable market for their maple syrup. In 1987, Auvergne Farms Limited was instrumental in forming a cooperative group of 44 maple syrup producers to pool our resources and share the risk. It failed in 1989. We found that a group of farmers at a boardroom table could not be creative and innovative enough to achieve successful market penetration. We picked up the pieces and with a few loyal producers proceeded to build a market. We identified the gift sector early in our development as it was prosperous, had good year around sales potential, and was concentrated in areas like Niagara, Banff, Jasper, and Vancouver. Within the gift sector, we found the Japanese tourist the most affluent and frequent customer. It was not long before we concentrated on this market segment. Our development has been a case of steady and gradual year over year improvement. More recently, we have regained the momentum, in our marketing through the introduction of our warehouse program. We will use it as a business model to further our sales elsewhere throughout North America. |
